OVERVIEW

Boston Children’s Chorus (BCC) harnesses the power of music to connect our city’s diverse communities, cultivate empathy and inspire social inquiry. Children, ages 7–18, come together across differences of race, religion, and socioeconomic status in a celebration of shared humanity and love of music. BCC bridges Greater Boston’s many diverse groups and fosters a sense of belonging and inclusion. Through intensive choral training and once- in-a-lifetime performing experiences locally, nationally, and around the world, BCC enhances the education and social development of youth as future leaders and global citizens in the 21st century.

PURPOSE

Recruitment and retention of singers is critical to the fulfilment of Boston Children’s Chorus’ mission and the goals of our program operations. The Recruitment Manager’s primary responsibilities include planning and executing recruitment programs, school workshops, pop-up choirs, and programmatic partnerships with youth development and social justice organizations. In addition, the Recruitment Manager will conduct up to 2 choirs at the lower choir level and serve as an artistic point person for lower choir conductors. They will oversee the program and education operations of BCC’s lower choirs. An integral part of the teaching and learning team at BCC, the curation of professional development opportunities for teaching assistants, as well as the evaluation of their performance will be included in the Recruitment Manager’s portfolio. The Recruitment Manager is vital to BCC’s next phase of growth and will be key in shaping a mission-forward experience for BCC singers, families, and lower choir artistic staff.

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

RECRUITMENT AND IN-SCHOOL ENGAGEMENT

  1. Co-create annual recruitment strategy, identifying key targets for success and monitoring progress towards recruitment goals
  2. Plan and execute key recruitment initiatives, including presenting learning workshops in target locations with schools and community partners
  3. Plan and execute up-to two pop-up choir programs per year in key recruitment locations
  4. Serve as project lead, and when needed, lead teacher for the Surround Care Coalition teaching project
  5. Support recruitment, scheduling and program design for innovation programs that lead to recruitment, including the early childhood Music and Movement program
  6. Work with program coordinator to schedule placement sessions for prospective singers and current staff
  7. Ensure that BCC’s values, mission, and vision are pertinent and practiced within the artistic scope of BCC’s programs and recruitment efforts

 

ARTISTIC AND EDUCATIONAL

  1. Plan and execute culturally responsive rehearsals, demonstrating missionally-aligned artistic and instructional practices that will serve as an organizational model
  2. Create clear pedagogical sequence for presenting and rehearsing repertoire, considering the musical, social and developmental needs of BCC singers, and communicate them efficiently to all team members
  3. Build and maintain strong relationships with Teaching Assistants to foster an atmosphere of transparency and professional growth
  4. Lead artistic planning processes and special learning projects for annual lower choir concert

 

ARTISTIC ADMINISTRATION

  1. Meet with the program and artistic leadership to regularly deliver verbal and written progress updates on key BCC recruitment initiatives
  2. Co-lead monthly artistic meetings
  3. Meet with advancement team to report on progress towards education, recruitment, and enrolment goals
  4. Lead administrative duties such as contributing to the budget process and managing teaching assistant timecards
  5. Develop singer-program surveys to measure participant satisfaction and experience in core choir programs
  6. Organize the dissemination of music and music supplies for all lower choir singers, conductors, and accompanists
  7. Contribute Lower Choir repertoire lists and performance notes for quarterly licensing reports to BMI and ASCAP
  8. Develop learning schedules for lower choir singers, working closely with program coordinator to disseminate resources

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

  • Master’s degree in music or equivalent experience preferred
  • Bilingual written and verbal proficiency in English and Spanish preferred
  • Proven success with recruitment for a choral music program or youth arts program
  • Minimum 2-4 years of direct experience and demonstrated success as a choral music educator
  • Minimum 2-4 years of knowledge and direct experience of Kodály, Gordon, and/or other singing-based methodology
  • Knowledge of choral techniques, vocal pedagogy, and a broad range of choral repertoire for a children’s choir
  • Have led a team or managed people, and you relish the opportunity to mentor, advise and develop others
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, especially public speaking and written skills
  • Strong administrative and computer skills required
  • The right candidate will be a capable, independent worker with strong entrepreneurial spirit, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, changing environment

Compensation and Benefits: 

Salary range for the role of Recruitment Manager at Boston Children’s Chorus is $55,000-60,000 annually. BCC offers a competitive benefit package including health insurance, 403(b) employer contributions, generous PTO, short term disability, and more.
