Organization: Peninsula Musical Arts Association (PMAA) is comprised of the Peninsula
Community Chorus (50+ non-auditioned singers) and a smaller group, Heart & Soul (16
auditioned singers). The chorus was formed in 1992 under the direction of Fred De Boer.
PMAA was incorporated as a California nonprofit public benefit corporation in 1998.
Volunteer singers come from all parts of the greater San Francisco Bay Area and represent a broad range of ages, vocations, and musical ability. Both groups perform a wide variety of music: classical, spirituals, popular, sacred, Broadway, classics, and jazz. The groups are self-funded, not tied to any educational or religious institution, run by a volunteer Board of Directors, and co-sponsored by the Foster City Parks and Recreation Department, which provides rehearsal space but no direct financial support.
Position Description: The Choral Director is responsible for preparing both groups to perform two (2) joint, self-produced concerts per season. He or she reports to and acts upon feedback from the PMAA Board of Directors, but is generally not responsible for normal administrative duties. Compensation is by salary only, with no other benefits, as this is a part-time, independent contractor position.
Schedule: Two seasons per year: spring (early January through concerts the first weekend in May) and fall (late August through concerts the first weekend in December).
Prepare and conduct two concerts and two technical rehearsals per season
Work collaboratively with the Board to select the concert repertoires
Work within the budget determined by the Board
Provide coaching in proper choral technique and diction
Provide singers with rehearsal markings, translations, and pronunciation
Direct sectional rehearsals, address musical problems within sections as needed
Prepare and conduct one weekly Tuesday evening rehearsal:
Chorus 7:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. and H&S 9:30 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.
Conduct one retreat per season (Saturday 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.)
Participate in concert planning with the Board
Assist in hiring and scheduling guest instrumentalists as needed
Participate occasionally in community or private events
Choral conducting experience
Ability to work with singers of all levels of musical ability
Excellent command of vocal production and vocal/choral performance techniques
Ability to attend Board meetings and/or concert planning meetings as necessary
