Commonwealth Youthchoirs Co-Artistic Director

 

Commonwealth Youthchoirs seeks a dynamic Co-Artistic Director, who, in collaboration with colleague Co-Artistic Director, will take the organization and its established musical and administrative staff into its third decade.

Founded in 2001, Commonwealth Youthchoirs, Inc. (CY) is a non-profit, community-based, non-denominational 501(c)(3) arts organization headquartered in the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia. CY operates five distinct programs that nurture a love of singing, music education, and a desire for excellence in over 800 primary and secondary students in the Southeastern Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey region.

Our programs include the Keystone State Boychoir (founded 2001), the Pennsylvania Girlchoir (founded 2004), Find Your Instrument! (2008), Garden State Girlchoir (founded 2016), New Jersey Boychoir (founded 2017), and several smaller ensembles. Position Summary

The Commonwealth Youthchoirs Co-Artistic Director shares responsibility to oversee the five main programs, with special attention to Find Your Instrument!, Keystone State Boychoir, and New Jersey Boychoir, and works cooperatively with a colleague Co-Artistic Director who oversees the Pennsylvania Girlchoir and the Garden State Girlchoir. Together, the Co-Artistic Directors vision, plan, and collaborate with music and program staff to realize a wide variety of inspiring choral performances. Co-Artistic Directors report to the CY Board of Directors. 

Key responsibilities include:

  • Provide Artistic Leadership Internationally to Locally: Develop relationships with arts partners around the globe to design transformative opportunities for the CY community.  
  • Develop the CY Community: Get to know the CY community. Lead efforts to develop and strengthen the community through singer recruitment and retention that honors participants and reflects the rich diversity of greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey. Maintain consistent and clear communications with stakeholders, singers, families and CY colleagues that ensure and uphold CY’s core values.
  • Partner and Sustain CY with the Board of Directors, Co-Artistic Director, and Staff into the organization’s next chapter. Develop new funding opportunities and sustain continuing relationships with funders.
  • Teach our Singers: Apply deep understanding and vision to challenge singers and produce unique experiences. Program diverse and adventurous repertoire that empowers singers and develops musical and life skills.  
  • Initiate new and support existing music education programs within under-resourced schools through CY’s Find Your Instrument! program.
  • Tour the World: Identify touring opportunities and lead tours that ensure the health and safety of singers while opening other cultures to them.
  • Recruit, hire, supervise, and collaborate with CY music and program staff.

Position Requirements

  • Experience with community-based children’s, youth, or other community programs, sustaining and building relationships with families, community, and donors
  • Teaching tenure with elementary-age through high school youth (treble, lower, and/or mixed voices) 
  • Diverse programmatic strengths within contemporary to early music, including interest in commissioning new works
  • Technological facility with teaching, producing, and performing choral music in virtual and in-person venues
  • Strongly preferred: M.M., M.Ed. or similar with choral or educational concentration; terminal degree preferred, bachelor’s degree possible with substantive experience

Compensation and Benefits: 

This position may be up to full-time with a competitive base salary along with a comprehensive benefits package.

This is a 12-month position with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2021.
